The facilities in Aetna's Institutes of Quality (IOQ) Bariatric Surgery Network have met our quality requirements. They do many procedures and have shown clear clinical results. These standards provide value and quality to our members.

Bariatric (weight loss) services need preauthorization (approval) to be covered. Please see our Clinical Policy Bulletins. Your can find them under Health Coverage Information on www.aetna.com (our public website).

Some plans do not cover bariatric surgery. And the Bariatric network is not available for all plans. Some facilities outside of the Bariatric network do not have surgeons who contract with Aetna. You may have to pay extra if you use a center that does not have doctors who contract with Aetna. Please check with your benefits plan to find out.
